Meeting Minutes

March 07, 2003

 

The meeting convened at 9:00 a. m.

 

Present:  Delegates Benson, Conroy, Davis, Frush, Gaines, Griffith, Healey, Holmes, Hubbard, Kelley, Menes, Moe, Niemann, Parker, Patterson, Procter, Ramirez, Ross, Turner, Vallario, and Howard

 

Absent:  Delegate Anthony Brown

 

Prayer:  Delegate Marvin Holmes

 

Delegate Howard introduced the first guest speaker, Dr.C. Daniel (Dan) Mote, Jr., President, University of Maryland.  Dr. Mote provided an overview of the University of Maryland’s campus in comparison with other private and government agencies, with over 5500 home addresses in Prince George’s County as well as 2680 vendors with 88 million dollars in revenues coming into Prince George’s county.  Economic development is a major factor with the University of Maryland with a research park that covers 128 acres that will include major government agencies and companies.  Dr. Mote invited Prince George’s County to participate in this major effort.

 

The second speaker was Dr. Ronald A. Williams, President of Prince George’s Community College.  Dr. Williams provided an overview of Prince George’s Community College and asked the Delegation to protect the college since they lost over 2 million dollars in budget cuts.  The college currently has over 4,000 students and with the recent budget cuts, student especially the 56% at the poverty level are a large number of students that come from the poor part of town.    Dr. Williams stated that the College is responding to the Latino population with a large percent of Hispanic students.  The primary issue for the College is Developmental Education.  He said, he would work with the leadership of Dr. Tignor(Board of Education) and the new superintendent to address these problems.

The Chair recognized the freshman Delegates and the Delegates who were from the districts who support the University of Maryland and Prince George’s Community College.  The Chair also commended Prince George’s Community College for recognizing their outstanding Alumni at a recent; Wall of Fame dedication ceremony.  The Chair congratulated life-long county resident Terri N. Tolliver who was added to the wall for achievements as a two-time Emmy Award winning producer at Fox5 News.  She is the daughter of Vernell Lawson, Assistant to the Chair.
