The Second - Prince George’s County - Delegation Meeting

January 30, 2004 – 9:00 a. m.

Present: Benson, Conroy, Davis, Fresh, Gaines, Griffith, Healey, Holmes, Hubbard, Kelley, Menes, Moe (late), Niemann, Parker, Patterson, Proctor, Ramirez, Turner, and Vaughn

Absent: Delegates Brown, Vallario

The Chair called the meeting of the Prince George’s House of Delegation to order at 9:10am. A warm welcome was offered by Chair Howard and Delegate Holmes opened with prayer. The Chair apologized for the inconvenience of our small Delegation room, but she encouraged everyone to continue to come, because the new building and a larger Delegation room is forthcoming.

The Chair acknowledged our guests, in attendance: Dr. Beatrice Tignor, Board of Education, State Board Member, Jo Anne Bell, County Council Camille Exum, Sheriff, Michael Jackson and Team Prince Georges’s. She also dedicated a moment to the memory of School Board Member, the late Reginald Dunn and Delegate Pete Rawlings. Both gave so much of themselves. Their dedication and commitment to the community will be missed.

The review of the Agenda showed Bi County Committee; no report; County Affairs;

Delegate Patterson, Committee Chair, stated that PG-401-04 and PG-402-04, listed had been withdrawn by sponsors. A Motion was entertained by Madam Chair, and seconded by Delegate Griffith to accept his report.

Chair Howard, introduced Dr. Andre’ Hornsby, Chief Executive Officer of Prince George’s County Schools who gave the Delegation two handouts which described a five-year quality Schools Program Strategic Plan. They were the 2004, Legislative Priorities and The Executive Summary, Prince George’s County Schools. He stated in order to achieve the Quality Schools program Strategic Plan, which is designed to address four essential questions identified in the Maryland State Department's Bridge to Excellence Guidelines, we must look at: 1.The Introduction which gives the Purpose of the Quality Schools Program Strategic Plan 2.The Mission What do we want for our children? 3. The Evidence of Need: How are we doing now? Actions Based Upon Evidence of Need: What are we going do about it? 4. Strategies to Attain the Goals How do we know that we have done it well? Dr. Hornsby continued to give us a wealth of information that related to the school system in Prince George’s County. The floor was opened for questions, many question were answered. The meeting was adjourned at 10:10am.
